Is Golden Dawn Tabernacle A Missionary Church?

The statement that "A church that is not growing, is dying" is a widely recognized fact, among Christains. Growth in a church is usually seen when new people join, showing that the church is actively reaching out. 'Evangelism' is a key part of this, which means sharing the Christian message to invite new people to join, both locally and abroad. The Bible passage Acts 2:42-47 shows that churches grow when they focus on sharing their faith and teaching others. Simply put, a church's love for God and its community helps it spread the Gospel both at home and around the world. Despite these widely accepted truths, Golden Dawn Tabernacle appears to overlook them, yet still considers itself an evangelistic church. This article will examine how GDT approaches missionary and evangelism work and its influence on the growth of the church.

The Two Pioneers book excerpt below clearly demonstrates that GDT believes they are a missionary church:

Page 138: "As God has abundantly blessed the Bride, She in turn has blessed others as well. Tabernaculo Emanuel furthered her ministry as a missionary church, as the Bride continued to live supernaturally one for another and reach out to the needs of the brothers in the local assembly and around the world. This manifested itself as the congregation worked together on various projects that included: compiling books of quotes and Scriptures concerning Biblical truths based off the Word that was being unveiled, expanding the translation work, constructing more apartments for the widows and elderly, and beginning a homeschool tutoring program for the children."

Evangelist/Missionary Outreach

Historically, the church had John Chacon Sr. serve as the resident evangelist & missionary for GDT, with his role focused on mostly traveling to third-world countries (primarily in Latin America) and preaching to message churches with a focus on proselytizing to bring in new message believers to those churches. Below is what the Two Pioneers book says about John Chacon's ministry while under Tabernaculo Emanuel / Golden Dawn Tabernacle:

Page 146 & 147: "After Brother John had been under the ministry of Brother Isaac for awhile, Brother Bernabe [Bernie-Ed.] Garcia (a pastor in Phoenix and the son of Brother Pablo Garcia) visited and preached for the brothers in the schoolhouse. Brother Isaac, who had known Brother Bernie since he was a child, had spoken to Brother Bernie about inviting Brother John to preach in Mexico. During Brother Bernie's visit, Brother John opened his home and invited Brother Isaac and Brother Bernie to have a bite to eat, and the two brothers became acquainted.

Brother John and Brother Bernie then went on a tour of Mexico together, and Brother John started his evangelistic ministry by traveling and preaching throughout Mexico. He also preached the Message on a local Spanish radio station. The church supported Brother John's ministry of traveling to many nations around the world until moving into the second tabernacle. By then, God had prospered his ministry, and it became self-sustaining. In Brother John's forty-five years of missionary work, he preached in more than forty-one countries worldwide.

In the latter part of his life, Brother John did not travel as much. As he remained faithfully under Brother Isaac's ministry, listening each Sunday and Wednesday to the Word of God being powerfully preached, he took notes of those phrases that struck his heart. Later, Brother John would compile various books and compose many Word songs based on these notes he took.

On September 5, 2020, at the age of seventy-seven, the Lord took His servant Brother John Chacon, Sr., Home."

The pace of travel for John Chacon noticeably decreased as Pastor Isaac Noriega cut ties with numerous message churches, limiting the destinations accessible to John Chacon. Following Chacon's death, Isaac Noriega has distanced himself from many ministers who were once close to Chacon, even going so far as to ignore their phone calls.

Notably, John Chacon was the sole designated evangelist/missionary in the church, and currently, there is no one fulfilling this role at Golden Dawn Tabernacle, despite its large congregation of approximately 500-600 members. This raises questions about the presence of the five-fold ministry, as mentioned in Ephesians 4:11, within Golden Dawn Tabernacle.

Below are a few youtube videos of John Chacon's sermons at various churches he ministered at:

Message Translation Outreach

The church opened "Grace Translation Center and Library" on November 5, 1980. This building has been extensively used for translating William Branham's sermons from English into Spanish (both text and audio formats).

Grace Translation and Library Center

Below is some of the history on how the translation efforts started and have evolved over the years, directly from the Two Pioneers book.

Page 117: "Then the missionary outreach portion of the ministry began to grow since Brother Isaac always had a burden to get the Message to the Spanish-speaking brethren. Inspired by God to take the Message to all the peoples of the Spanish-speaking countries throughout the world, the ministry at Tabernaculo Emanuel financially supported the translation work that was spearheaded by Brother Oscar Jacques, Sr.

Tabernaculo Emnauel picked up enough momentum on its translation efforts, that Joseph Branham and George Smith from Voice of God recordings (branham.org/en/MessageAudio) partnered with the church. However, this partnership fell apart at some point as described below in the Two Pioneers book excerpt.

Page 124 & 125: "About this time [late 1980s], Brother Joseph Branham took over Spoken Word and renamed it Voice of God. Knowing that Brother Isaac was already involved in the translation and distribution of Spanish messages, he offered to work together with Brother Isaac on the translation work by volunteering to print all the translated material, with the agreement that Brother George Smith would be in charge and would be the main translator. Voice of God also wanted Brother Pedro Zuniga II to be the voice on the Spanish recordings since he had an unmistakable quality of voice that they liked.

Eventually the agreement with Voice of God did not work out, and Brother Jacques and Brother Pedro began working independently from Voice of God. Once these two brothers went on their own, the translation work greatly expanded. Brother Jacques continued to work tirelessly after regular work hours to translate the written word, while Brother Pedro recorded the translated messages onto cassettes, and Brother Rey prepared the completed translated material for shipping to Spanish-speaking brothers in countries around the world. Minister brothers that received these messages were from all over the world, including not only Central America, South America, and Spain, but also the United States, Puerto Rico, and Canada, since pastors throughout these countries requested this material for the Spanish-speaking brothers in their congregations. Not only was Tabernaculo Emanuel extensively involved in distributing messages to pastors who requested them, but it also provided visiting ministers with access to a small room in the Library which contained a supply of Spanish messages and tapes to take as they needed."

The translation efforts have ramped up significantly in the past two decades as some of the volunteers retired from their full time jobs and focused all of their efforts on translating.

Page 139 & 140: "In 2005, Brother Isaac was inspired to have the brothers begin translating the messages in chronological order, and that is when the translation work exploded. Brother Rey then retired in 2008 and also began working full-time in the translation work with the printing, packaging, and mailing of the Message books and CD's.

From the time the translation work began in chronological order in 2005, over five hundred messages have been translated; and since the translation work originally began in the late 1960s, a total of over six hundred different messages have been translated and distributed to the various Spanish-speaking nations in South and Central America, as well as throughout the United States, Puerto Rico, and Canada. With a new generation now carrying on the work, reading material in both the English and Spanish languages is being sent all over the world to edify the Bride of Christ in many nations, and Tabernaculo Emanuel is moving forward in the Bride's ministry as a missionary church. Through sundry channels of outreach, the Bride in the local body of believers has touched the lives of thousands in Tucson and of tens of thousands of souls around the world."

Page 166: "This has been God's kindness toward the Bride in this local assembly, and with what God has blessed Her, She tries to bless others also. We have an extensive ministry in the translation work throughout the United States, Mexico, Central America, South America, Portugal, and Spain. We have also been able to help build churches in Africa, Trinidad, Russia, New Zealand, Australia, and South America. We are able to help others because of God's blessings and through the tithing and offerings of the congregation."

The financial aspects of the translation work at the church are not clear, as the church is known for being secretive about its finances. While it's likely that Golden Dawn Tabernacle funds this translation work using the regular tithes from its congregation, it's important to note that almost all the translators work on a voluntary basis without pay. Additionally, it has been reported that some churches who receive the translated materials choose to give a portion of their tithes to Isaac Noriega as a gesture of gratitude. However, it is unclear whether this is a mandatory practice or simply a choice made by some churches.

Local Community Outreach

Golden Dawn Tabernacle has not engaged in any local outreach in Tucson for many years. To our knowledge, there has never been any outreach specifically targeted at the Tucson community by the church. The new buildings and facilities have been constructed solely for church use. The majority of outreach efforts were carried out by John Chacon Sr., primarily focusing on international work, which decreased significantly in the 1990s (around the time they moved to the second tabernacle). In the church's early days, member-driven recruitment was quite active, with church members often sharing their faith to attract new attendees. However, current members of Golden Dawn Tabernacle are often reluctant to disclose their affiliation due to the church's extremist reputation and are unlikely to invite others to services. Newcomers who do visit are subject to thorough scrutiny and screening by the deacons and ushers before being allowed entry. Visitors who appear "worldly" or do not conform to the church's dress code are particularly subject to disapproval.

Isaac Noriega - Elder of the City

Isaac calls himself the elder of the city as discussed in the Two Pioneers book excerpt below:

Page 83 & 84: "As God continued to move upon Brother Isaac's heart to begin preaching, he went to speak with Brother McHughes and Brother Pearry to ask what they thought about his starting a church. They assured him: "We don't have a problem if you start a church." Brother Isaac established his ministry by consulting the other pastors of the city, following the necessary steps as outlined by Brother Branham. To this day, not one other minister who has started a church in Tucson has spoken to Brother Isaac first, except for Brother Caleb Duron. They have not had the common courtesy to come and ask advice of the elder of the city. Although Brother Isaac has certainly never sought to preside over others or establish himself as an elder, where is the respect as the prophet taught?"

He seems displeased with the pastors who established churches in Tucson without seeking his approval. Isaac's sense of disrespect, stemming from not being consulted, is somewhat ironic considering his own public criticisms of Pearry Green and Doug McHughes in later years. This suggests a desire for respect from others while showing a reluctance to extend the same courtesy. Over the past thirty years, Isaac has grown increasingly distant and unfriendly towards local message churches in Tucson, leading to a negative and isolationist reputation.

Conclusion

The church hails itself as a missionary church. It certainly does not meet that definition for the local Tucson community given how isolated it has become. It has also not met that definition in terms of sending out missionaries abroad for several decades as the church has become more isolated and restrictive. It can be argued that GDT's missionary work is certainly more non-traditional, through their translation work, which is extensive, thanks to the countless volunteer hours of the translation team. However, some of this work has been redundant with the translation work that Voice of God recordings is doing. If Tabernaculo Emanuel / Golden Dawn Tabernacle had been able to continue working with VOG, then perhaps the translation work would have progressed faster. Also, VOG has an extensive online database that makes the sermons readily available for download both in audio and text format. Surely this is a more effective and efficient way to share the sermons across a larger global audience?

Since the church does not do any local outreach, the church has not had any significant external growth (other than the Sierra Vista Church takeover). Most of the growth has been internal due to current families growing and having more children. However, this is unsustainable long-term, as almost everyone in the church is related at this point. With not being allowed to marry from fellow sister churches, the church will die slowly.

Isaac Noriega claims that under his ministry, "the Bride in the local body of believers has touched the lives of thousands in Tucson and of tens of thousands of souls around the world." We end this article by asking our readers, how many lives do you think this ministry has touched in the local Tucson community? How many in the international community? Does the church have an active five-fold ministry?

Isaac has pushed more people away from God then he has saved because of his greed. God has a special place in hell for Isaac

Jeremiah 23:1-4

Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture!” declares the Lord. 2 Therefore thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, concerning the shepherds who care for my people: “You have scattered my flock and have driven them away, and you HAVE NOT attended to them. Behold, I will attend to you for your EVIL deeds, declares the Lord. 3 Then I will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the countries where I have driven them, and I will bring them back to their fold, and they shall be fruitful and multiply. 4 I will set shepherds over them who will care for them, and they shall FEAR NO MORE, nor be dismayed, neither shall any be missing, declares the Lord.

Good topic for conversation, I often ask myself this question:

What was it that we had? Evangelism? Indoctrination? Looking to follow something or someone? A membership group? What was it that those of us from the “third world” experienced when we received Juan Chacon in our churches as evangelist of the church of Tucson, USA? (theoretically a more mature church than many others, with a more mature ministry than many others, that had met the prophet and above all things they have dollars, they move with dollars, they have the power of the dollar).

What I remember from the 80s and 90s, here in Buenos Aires, in the Shalom tabernacle, we were hooked and “in love” with the 7 thunders movement, all that emotionality and energy that was generated around that, is that most of us were young and inexperienced, happy to be part of the chosen ones, with joy and happy songs. That feeling left me from that time of being in the “Thunders”, a feeling of joy and camaraderie. We had “star” preachers like Coleman and Lebron, and later many others, in Chile that movement had prospered quite a bit.  There was something that united us and made us feel that we were all the same, it was ignorance and the same emotions. Specifically, it was ignorance about the power of dominion that would later manifest itself in our beloved leaders.

I don’t remember very well how Juan Chacón appeared in our church, surely Hugo Castillo was already tired of us talking all the time about Coleman and other ministers… I don’t know if it was part of “maturing” as a church, what I do know is that our leaders did not have much education and preparation for a tremendous task, and from the beginning, the foundations on which the group was built were based on the need to feel like being. the chosen ones above others, at any cost…

I don’t know how much responsibility Juan Chacón and Isaac Noriega have in all this, but the seed of love for the power of dominion was already in Hugo, perhaps Isaac was “the example to follow” on that path of “maturation” that Hugo so needed.  And those who love and need the power of dominion learn from others who are like them, they admire others who have “more power.” Well, for them the power of dominion is God, they relate God with the power of Dominion, not with unconditional Love.

We do not know what would have happened if some evangelist came forward with another vision, with wisdom, with another gospel other than the power of dominion.  So I suspect that what we experienced with Juan Chacón and his evangelism was something similar to an evangelization of a church model, Tucson selling itself as an example of a church to follow. And dominion power was the way to achieve that model But we little sheep didn’t suspect that.

Tucson was not just Isaac Noriega, Tucson was a model of a church to follow, all of you were the model to follow, Isaac as a pastor included.

Educated, submitted to the ministry, your picturesque clothing, your music with piano and organ, the good church that you had, the comforts, the order, etc. All that…  All that that was seen from the outside and that those from the “third world”, those who do not know, those who do not have much culture and knowledge about spiritual abuse and emotional manipulation, would buy as “the church that pleases God.”

And Hugo adopted or bought that system or method, perhaps it was the method that he had seen and experienced as a young man and he could not do much against that, that of the power of dominion.  He surely never knew unconditional love, he never knew the love of God.  There everything began to change, the emotional revival and joy ended. The songs were different, now it was piano and organ, no jumping and dancing, no anything resembling Rock n Roll. The manipulation of the prophet’s scriptures and quotes became more and more perfected to further subject our lives, families and minds to fear.

In those years I left Shalom…

Then what I know after that was from seeing my mother, the fanatical, idolatrous and admiring behavior that my mother had towards her beloved pastor and leader.  My mother suffered a lot from this need to want to please her pastor as if he were God and at the same time love her own children and husband who did not believe in God Hugo.

So, I don’t know if Juan Chacón knew that he was actually preaching a church model to follow… Was Juan aware of the abuses and manipulations that were done in the name of God? I would like to know: What did Juan Chacón do in the face of Isaac’s humiliations and injustices? Did Juan have a passion for the evangelism of Jesus or was it a passion for carrying and preaching Noriega’s method? Was John “tamed” by Isaac?

Talk more about Juan Chacón, tell what you know, please, first-hand, not what someone told you.

What did Juan like to do? What was he passionate about? What did Juan love? What was he weak in? What was he strong at? What was his personality like? Was he insecure? Was he an anxious person? What do you remember about him? What feeling did you have about him? What was his health like? What I remember about him in regards to his health was that he couldn’t eat anything, he had a pretty strict diet..

When has GD ever gone to a Local park and fed the homeless? Never When has GD ever stood outside an abortion clinic to pray humbly and in silence for the babies and the mothers walking in the clinic? Never With all the construction workers at the church..and all the buildings being built for Isaac’s kingdom… have they ever went around the neighborhood volunteering to make repairs etc for less fortunate families? Never I know several churches who do this for the Tucson community. But to GD they are the elite! But it’s not about being elite, or following rules. Isaac has made them think the path to heaven goes through him. GD is all about Isaac controlling you and your children first then secondly his money.. In my opinion.. The Love of Jesus Christ left this place in the mid 80s when he started taking families out from under the blood as a means of controlling families from having relationships with people who chose to worship at other places. Are there currently individuals there who are saved? yes. But these individuals are under the spell/fear of Isaac as well. Not under the Joy of being a Christian living for others Currently GD is nothing more than a dog eat dog power pyramid of individuals and families looking for Isaac’s blessings to secure extra blessings and freedoms for their children.. The bottom feeders stay because they believe that their is no salvation outside of Isaac and do their weekends in the prison and find themselves on the days between services hiding their smart phones, mini vacations and watching UofA games in secret. they know these things are not a sin! But like many things over the decades Isaac took away.. GD families are nothing more than frogs in a boiling pot of water waiting to die..all the while thinking they are elites and some how through following rules they will earn Gods favor. So blinded because it’s all Isaac’s rules and his approval they will live their entire miserable existence for. I say this with empathy as I watch my own family live like North Koreans families under a dictatorship May God Open Your Eyes!

It’s actually very good that they don’t do outreach. Or evangelize outside of their church. The more people stay out of that place the better. GDT is killing itself. Another point is how can they help people outside of their church when they won’t even help their own members without Isaac’s approval?? Growing up I would be so embarrassed to say what church I attended because of all the craziness inside. All the extra rules, Isaac’s angry face, and horrible attitude. The constant pressure and fear doesn’t leave you with strength to enjoy life much less evangelize. Most people currently attending have mentally left the church (another point of why they don’t evangelize). Although still physically there. Which is a win. Isaac has also taught the congregation that if a visitador comes to visit, “hears the word” and after refuses to attend GDT then he is doomed. And you are not allowed to talk to him or fellowship him because he rejected his ministry.

Has usado las palabras dolor, difícil, verdades…

A cualquier precio.
