Church Safety and Abuse Concerns

GDT & Pima County Health Department COVID-19 Investigation

As we find ourselves in mid-August 2023, we are brought to a reflective pause, thinking back on the tumultuous year of 2020. This year was not only a defining moment for the global population but also a critical juncture for the Golden Dawn Tabernacle. While the COVID-19 pandemic was in full force, countless businesses and religious institutions around the world put protective measures in place to shield their customers and congregations. Governments worldwide recommended social distancing, wearing face masks, limiting gathering sizes, and adhering to stringent hygiene practices to mitigate the spread. Contrarily, the Golden Dawn Tabernacle disregarded these protective steps, resulting in devastating outcomes in the summer of 2020. It's been roughly three years since the height of the pandemic-related fatalities within the congregation of Golden Dawn Tabernacle. Through this article, we aim to reexamine that period, delving into our investigative findings and the results from public record searches, exploring the Golden Dawn Tabernacle leadership's approach during the COVID pandemic.

Understanding a GDT Church Service: A Breakdown

Many readers have provided feedback, suggesting that our description of the length and peculiarities of a typical Golden Dawn Tabernacle (GDT) church service might be somewhat exaggerated. It can be challenging for someone who has never attended such a service to grasp its structure and repetitiveness. Even former members who have recently left the church may be surprised at the extent to which practices have changed. In this post, we aim to provide an overview of a typical GDT church service and highlight some of the rules that the congregation must follow. This will illustrate how the GDT church differs from other religious institutions and contributes to the BITE model.

Courting, Marriage and the Lack Thereof at GDT

In this article, we explore the topic of courtship and marriage at Golden Dawn Tabernacle and how it significantly differs from conventional church or traditional practices. This subject often evokes painful memories for numerous former and current members, as it has given rise to heartbreak, distressing experiences, loveless unions, and alienation. The Golden Dawn Tabernacle Ministry has instituted regulations that prohibit dating and, in effect, led to the point where it seems arranged marriages are occurring. Pastor Isaac Noriega has gradually added more rules and principles for courting, effectively eroding it to the point of nonexistence, utilizing the draconian doctrines and rules we have previously discussed. The consequences of this approach have been deeply disheartening and have played a major role in the departure of young people in recent years.

GDT Ministry's Treatment of Women

In this article, we investigate the manner in which the leadership of the Golden Dawn Tabernacle ministry treats women both within the church and in broader society. This church has frequently faced criticism for its hostile marginalization of women. The doctrinal tenets of the church imply that women hold a lesser status compared to men, leading some critics to argue that it promotes the idea of women as second-class citizens deserving of subordinate treatment. The situation is particularly concerning as females significantly outnumber males, particularly because of the increasing number of young men leaving the church. Through this investigation, we aim to reveal some concerning realities regarding the church's approach to its female congregants.

Behavior, Information, Thought, and Emotional Control

In this article, we delve into the strategies of manipulation implemented by Pastor Isaac Noriega and the leadership team of Golden Dawn Tabernacle. Through our investigation of similar organizations, we came across an unsettling pattern of conduct exhibited by Golden Dawn's leadership. Esteemed specialist in undue influence and controlling groups, Steven Hassan, has compiled a list of common traits shared by such groups. This article is based on Hassan's BITE model, which encompasses four types of authoritarian control: Behavior, Information, Thought, and Emotional. It is noteworthy that Golden Dawn conforms to nearly every single point on this list. Groups that fulfill the BITE criteria are categorized as cults.

A Culture of Church Safety Negligence & Grave Consequences

This article examines the reluctance within the church to seek medical help in emergency situations, which has resulted in injury and, in some tragic instances, death among church members. It is based on interviews with current and former church members. Vision, Purpose & Mission

We have noticed a significant amount of attention being directed towards this website lately, both from the general public and from current and former members of Golden Dawn Tabernacle. In fact, Pastor Isaac Noriega even mentioned this website during one of his recent sermons as he attempted to defend his actions. With that in mind, we would like to clarify the purpose of this website. Vision Statement

Separating Families - Fear, Abuse and Control

Separation Within The Church - Mistrust and Infighting Pastor Isaac Noriega According to current and former church members, Pastor Isaac Noriega, the leader of the church, is well known for the harsh tactics he uses for maintaining tight control over the church and its members. It is important to note that Isaac teaches that as the pastor and head of this sovereign church, he holds authority over them, so it is important that they be subject to his teachings. One of the methods of control he routinely uses is encouraging families to separate, even those who are current church members, by suggesting there is no reason for them to visit each other, especially grandparents. This is believed to be done in cases where he fears the grandparents may influence their children and grandchildren against him, especially if he has had a falling out with them.

COVID-19 Deaths & Abuse

Pastor Isaac Noriega As mentioned in our Church Rules blog post, there is a culture within the church that generally discourages the use of medicine and science. If a person falls ill, it is often believed that their poor spiritual condition is to blame. Seeking medical treatment is discouraged and only considered as a last resort. During the COVID-19 Coronavirus pandemic, Pastor Isaac Noriega and the leadership of the church largely ignored recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to stay home, social distance, and wear masks. For a short time, deacons greeted congregants at the entrance with hand sanitizer and a handshake, in an effort to follow CDC recommendations. However, this practice only lasted for two weeks. Isaac claimed that the virus was started by snakes (Isaac has a tendency to use snakes as a symbolic metaphor for things he considers evil) rather than bats (the common theory of origin at the time) and preached that the pandemic was a "judgment on the world, not the Bride," implying that church members who were true believers would be unaffected. As a result, Isaac discouraged taking precautions and mocked masks and social distancing. It is worth noting that the church has a significant number of elderly congregants, some of whom were at high risk for COVID infection.

Fire Safety Concerns

Recently, the Golden Dawn Tabernacle / Tabernaculo Emanuel school building underwent several failed fire inspections after a complaint was lodged with the Tucson Fire Department about possible fire safety concerns in the school building. After multiple inspection failures, certain inspection findings have been addressed by the church, but there is still an outstanding determination for occupancy that might require the church to install a fire alarm system and fire sprinkler system.
